Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our metals

What is the difference between 14K and 18K gold?
18K gold contains 75% pure gold, while 14K gold contains 58.3% pure gold. 18K has a richer, warmer color and is more valuable. 14K is more durable and scratch-resistant, making it ideal for everyday wear.
What is gold vermeil?
Gold vermeil (pronounced "ver-may") is sterling silver coated with a thick layer of 18K gold. It offers the luxurious look of gold with the affordability of silver. Vermeil is higher quality than standard gold plating because the base is sterling silver and the gold layer is significantly thicker.
Is your jewelry hypoallergenic?
Solid gold (14K and 18K), platinum, and 925 sterling silver are generally hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. Gold vermeil is also typically well-tolerated. Gold plated brass may cause reactions in people with metal allergies. If you have known allergies, we recommend choosing solid gold, platinum, or sterling silver.
Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, sterling silver can tarnish over time when exposed to air and moisture. The good news is that tarnish can be easily removed with a silver polishing cloth. Regular wear actually helps prevent tarnish. Store silver in an airtight bag when not in use.
What is white gold?
White gold is an alloy of pure gold mixed with white metals such as palladium or nickel, then plated with rhodium for a bright white finish. The rhodium plating may wear over time and can be restored by a jeweler.
Can I wear my jewelry in the shower or pool?
We recommend removing all jewelry before showering, swimming, or entering hot tubs. Chlorine and salt water can damage metals and pearls. This is especially important for gold plated brass and vermeil pieces, as water and chemicals can accelerate wear of the gold layer.
How should I store my jewelry?
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch, jewelry box with compartments, or airtight bag to prevent scratching and tarnishing. Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. Do not store in the bathroom, as moisture accelerates tarnish.
How do I know what metal my piece is made of?
The metal type is clearly listed on each product page under "Jewelry Details" in the Product Specifications tab. It is also indicated on your order confirmation. Contact us at contact@houseofpearls.com if you need help identifying your piece.
