Understanding Golden South Sea Pearl Grades

AAAA (Gem Collection): Top 1% of harvest. Exceptional satiny luster that Golden South Seas are famous for, combined with the deepest, richest golden color. Near-perfect round shape and virtually clean surface. Extremely rare and valuable.
AAA (Superior): Top 5-10% of harvest. Very high satiny luster with strong inner glow. Rich medium-to-deep golden tone. Round with minimal surface characteristics. Represents the classic luxury Golden South Sea look.
AA+ (Fine Quality): Top 15% of harvest. High luster with good warmth in color. Near-round with slight surface markings. Excellent value for the size and golden color.
AA (Classic): Good luster with lighter golden tone. Semi-round to near-round with minor surface markings. The most accessible entry into Golden South Sea pearls.

Note on Golden Color: The depth of golden color significantly affects value. Deep, rich "24K" gold is the most prized, followed by champagne gold, and light cream gold. All are natural — Golden South Sea pearls receive no color treatment.

How We Grade Our Pearls

Every pearl at House of Pearls is evaluated using a four-dimensional grading system:

Factor	Weight	What We Look For
Luster	40%	The intensity and sharpness of light reflected from the pearl's surface. Higher grades show mirror-like reflections with crisp clarity. This is the single most important factor in pearl beauty and value.
Shape	25%	Roundness and symmetry. While perfectly round pearls are rarest and most valuable, symmetrical drop, oval, and button shapes are also highly prized. Baroque (free-form) shapes offer unique character at accessible prices.
Surface	20%	The cleanliness of the pearl's surface. Higher grades have fewer and smaller blemishes, spots, or irregularities. Minor surface characteristics are natural and proof of authenticity — they do not diminish durability.
Color	15%	Body color and overtone (the secondary color visible when light hits the pearl). We evaluate color depth, evenness, and the attractiveness of the overtone. Rarer overtones (peacock on Tahitian, deep gold on Golden South Sea, rosé on Akoya) command premium prices.

Important Notes

Natural Characteristics: All pearls have natural surface characteristics (bumps, spots, or slight irregularities). These are not flaws — they prove your pearl is genuine and untreated. Only synthetic pearls have "perfect" surfaces.
Nacre Thickness: Thicker nacre produces better luster and durability. South Sea and Tahitian pearls naturally have the thickest nacre. Akoya Hanadama pearls are certified to have minimum 0.4mm nacre thickness.
Shape Variety: While round pearls are the classic standard, baroque and circled pearls are increasingly popular for their unique, organic beauty. Our grading system applies the same luster, surface, and color criteria to all shapes.
Origin Matters: Pearl type (Freshwater, Akoya, Tahitian, South Sea) determines the natural characteristics available. We grade each type against its own potential — a AAA Tahitian and a AAA Akoya both represent the top tier of their respective categories.
