Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our Classic Freshwater Pearl Strands

Q1: What are freshwater pearls, and how do they differ from saltwater pearls?

Freshwater pearls are cultivated in lakes, rivers, and ponds — primarily in China. They are known for their wide range of sizes, shapes, and colors, and they typically offer excellent value compared to saltwater varieties like Akoya, South Sea, or Tahitian pearls. While saltwater pearls often have a sharper, more mirror-like luster, high-quality freshwater pearls boast a soft, warm glow that many customers find equally beautiful and more versatile for everyday wear. Our strands use carefully selected round to nearly-round freshwater pearls with high luster.

Q2: Are the colored pearls (pink, purple, black, multicolor) natural or dyed?

Our Classic White, Pink, Purple, and Multicolor pearls are all natural colors — no treatments or dyes. These colors occur naturally in freshwater mussels. Our Black freshwater pearl strands are color-enhanced. They are made from white freshwater pearls that undergo a gentle, permanent dyeing process. The color is stable and will not rub off or transfer to skin or clothing. All treatments are disclosed transparently, and every strand is graded for luster and surface quality regardless of color.

Q3: How do I choose the right pearl size for me?

Pearl size is a matter of personal style and presence: • 5–6mm: Delicate and subtle. Ideal for layering, petite frames, or a minimal everyday look. • 7–8mm: The classic standard. Balanced, versatile, and our most popular choice for first-time buyers. • 9–10mm: Noticeable and luminous. Perfect for evening events, gifting, or when you want a stronger presence. • 11–12mm: Bold and statement-making. Best for formal occasions, collectors, or those who love dramatic jewelry. If you are unsure, 7–8mm is the safest choice — it flatters every age and works with any outfit.

Q4: How do I choose the right necklace length?

Length changes the entire look of a pearl strand: • 16" Choker: Sits at the base of the throat. Elegant and close-fitting. Best for evening, bridal, or high necklines. • 18" Princess: Falls at the collarbone. The most versatile length — works with 90% of necklines and occasions. If you buy only one length, make it this. • 20" Matinee: Sits just below the collarbone. Sophisticated for business and semi-formal wear. Great with turtlenecks. • 24" Opera: Reaches the bust line. Dramatic and formal. Can be doubled for a two-strand look. • 30–35" Rope: Falls below the bust. Maximum versatility — wear long, doubled, or knotted. A true statement piece. Pro tip: If you are between sizes, choose the longer option. A necklace can be shortened, but lengthening is difficult.

Q5: What is the difference between AAA and AAAA grade?

Both grades are beautiful — the difference is in surface perfection and luster intensity: • AAAA: Highest luster with minimal surface blemishes (less than 5% of the pearl surface). The premium choice for gifting, bridal, and heirloom pieces. • AAA: Very good luster with minor blemishes (5–10% of the surface). Excellent value for everyday wear and self-purchase. All our pearls are hand-selected and strung. The grade difference is subtle to the untrained eye but meaningful for those seeking perfection.

Q6: How should I care for my freshwater pearl necklace?

Pearls are organic gems and require gentle care: • Put pearls on last — after makeup, perfume, and hairspray. Chemicals can dull the nacre over time. • Wipe after wearing with a soft, dry cloth to remove skin oils and residue. • Store separately in a soft pouch or the provided gift box. Avoid contact with other jewelry that might scratch the surface. • Keep away from heat and direct sunlight for extended periods. • Have them restrung periodically if worn frequently — every 1–2 years is recommended.

Q7: Can I wear my pearl necklace in the shower, pool, or ocean?

We do not recommend wearing your pearl necklace in water. Chlorine, salt water, soaps, and shampoos can damage the pearl's nacre (the iridescent outer layer) and dull its luster over time. Additionally, the 925 sterling silver clasp may tarnish with prolonged water or chemical exposure. For the longevity of your piece, remove your pearls before swimming, showering, or exercising.

Q8: Can I layer multiple pearl strands together?

Absolutely — layering is one of the most stylish ways to wear pearls. Our customers love combining: • A 16" choker with an 18" princess for a graduated look • An 18" princess with a 24" opera for depth and dimension • Two strands of the same length but different sizes (e.g., 6mm + 9mm) • Different colors — white with pink, or white with black for contrast For the cleanest layered look, keep a 2-inch minimum gap between each strand length.

Q9: Are these pearl necklaces suitable for weddings and bridal wear?

Yes — our Classic White strand is one of our most popular bridal choices. The 18" Princess length is the traditional bridal standard and pairs beautifully with strapless, V-neck, and sweetheart necklines. For brides seeking something unique, our Pink or Multicolor strands add a soft, romantic touch. The AAAA grade is recommended for wedding photography, as the higher luster catches light beautifully. Every necklace ships in a gift-ready box with a certificate of authenticity — perfect for presenting to bridesmaids or as a wedding gift.

Q10: What clasp is used, and is it secure?

All our Classic Freshwater Pearl Strands are secured with a 925 sterling silver clasp. Sterling silver is durable, hypoallergenic, and tarnish-resistant with proper care. The clasp features a spring-ring or lobster-claw mechanism (depending on strand size) that clicks securely into place. For longer opera and rope lengths, the clasp is proportionally sized to balance the weight of the strand.

Q11: Do the pearls come with a certificate and gift packaging?

Yes. Every strand includes: • A Certificate of Authenticity detailing pearl type, size, shape, and grade • A premium gift box with soft interior lining • A soft storage pouch for travel and daily protection • A pearl care card with cleaning and storage instructions The packaging is ready for gifting — no additional wrapping needed.
